The Federal government has been in shutdown since Oct. 1 2025. This shutdown impacts how funding is distributed and has widespread impacts on state-administered, federally-funded programs like SNAP.

  • If the shutdown continues, DSHS will not be able to issue food benefits starting in November. This is because Washington administers SNAP benefits, but the Federal government funds them.
  • Hundreds of DSHS staff will be temporarily laid off, which will increase wait times for assistance, both in person and over the phone.
  • Despite the shutdown, you may still have to complete new work requirements. Check out our Impacts of HR1 factsheet for more info.

I rely on benefits – what should I do?

  • Continue to apply for benefits like SNAP and Medicaid if you need them. It is important to demonstrate the need for these programs to legislators, and your application will be processed when the government reopens.
  • Local food banks and mutual aid groups can help meet your food needs. Check out lists of options near you:
